Senior citizens seek employment to combat financial and emotional insecurities…
The strong family-ties that exist in India ensure that in most cases, children take care of elderly parents. This is because the pension or interest income that seniors receive is not solely able to meet present-day living costs. Falling interest rates and eroded savings have compounded the problem.
Even when children take care of parents, the latter would prefer to stand on their own feet if possible, by taking up post-retirement jobs. Even seniors who are well-off on their own may seek to work for self-satisfaction or to make use of their time productively. Even though many employers may not want them, there are organizations who do consider seniors for full-time or part-time jobs in view of the latter's wealth of experience as well as willingness to work for reasonable salaries. Elders are loyal, mature and and possess a strong sense of responsibility.
How can the elderly try to secure a job after retirement?
Since retired persons have years of experience behind them in their field, ideally they would like to pursue what they did during their career. For those possessing appropriate skill sets, opportunities exist in emerging sectors in the economy like IT, BPO, media, finance etc.
Part-time and full-time jobs in clerical, administration and accounting functions are also available for the retired. In all these jobs basic computer skills are a must, but these can be easily acquired by joining a short-term computer course.
