Kalaripayattu is India’s unique contribution to the world of martial arts. Centuries back it evolved in Kerala and today it’s fame has spread throughout the world. Kalripayattu combines grace and style of an artist with the speed and action of a warrior. It involves a series of measured steps, postures, high leaps and moves which make the body fit for combat, both unarmed and armed.
Kalari is the arena where Kalaripayattu is practiced. Traditionally this is a rectangular area of 21 ft width and 42 ft length. Kalaripayattu training can start at age seven, but one can decide to learn this martial art at any later age.
The full training imparted by gurukuls can take as long as seven years to master but it is also possible to learn basics in a shorter time. Training involves three stages. In the first stage, beginners learn balancing and flexibility. In the second stage, aggression and defense are practiced by using sticks and other wooden weapons. In the third stage, training is with metal weapons like dagger, sword, spear etc..
