The legacy of Swiss watches endures…
Wearing a Swiss watch is like wearing your pride on the wrist. Swiss watches are unparalleled in respect of craftsmanship, quality and exclusivity. They are elegance personified.
Swiss do make watches with quartz movement, but the fame and reputation of Swiss rests on designing and manufacturing mechanical watches (“automatic” watches). These are masterpieces made by craftsmen, especially the luxury high-end models.
Vintage Swiss watches are those which are older than 20 or 30 years. Obviously, these are prized by their owners and are very expensive on account of the vintage value. Therefore, repair and reconditioning vintage watches should be done by experts.
Repair and reconditioning of vintage Swiss mechanical watches…
The first stage of this process involves cleaning. The entire watch is dissembled and the parts are cleaned with petrol and a solution containing chemicals, water and shampoo. The parts are then dried under a yellow light.
The next stage concerns improving the watch’s appearance which is achieved by dial repainting, case buffing and polishing. This would remove scratches on dial and case.
Finally the parts are assembled, the main parts being balance wheel, spring and the wheels which make the hour, minute and second hands run. If mechanism needs repair, the same is carried out and required parts are replaced with original parts, if available. Glass may be changed if scratches are seen.
