Millions of Indians are employed by temp staffing agencies...
Temp staffing agencies are independent HR companies with a large pool of employees who are deployed at their clients' offices on temporary basis. The process is known as 'temping' and the employees 'temps'. Temps usually perform non-core functional jobs like sales agents, retail clerks, logistics men, customer support staff, back-office staff etc. Most of the temp assignments do continue for a fair length of time. In case an assignment actually does end, the staffing agency will place him or her with one of their other clients. The temp staffing agency is the formal employer and therefore pays salary and benefits like provident fund as well as health insurance and is responsible for all employment-related HR matters.
The staffing agency selects persons from those who approach them and then deploys them with a client who needs persons with specific qualification and skills. However, there are instances where the corporate client identifies a candidate and then asks the staffing agency to place him or her on the agency’s rolls.
The temp phenomenon has caught-on because corporates do not want to directly employ persons for non-core functions. Also, companies do not want to hurt their corporate image by taking on regular employees when business is booming and laying them off during times of recession. By taking on temps, companies can flexibly manage manpower during business downturns and upswings.
How do you go about in taking up a temp staff job?
The agencies can be approached by telephone or through their websites. You will be asked to upload resume to their website or to forward it by email. Subsequently, you will be asked to visit their office during which skills are assessed through interview as well as proficiency tests. Selected candidates are placed at clients’ locations.
